There is much more to finding your astrological soul mate than your sun sign, although this can be a good first indicator. Sun sign compatibility relies on the elements to judge whether two people will be right for each other. The four elements in astrology are air, water, fire and earth.
The air signs are Gemini, Libra and Aquarius. The water signs are Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. The fire signs are Aries, Leo and Sagittarius. The earth signs are Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn.

The signs that share the same element get along with each other because they share the same goals in life, although they may have different ways of seeking those goals. Air people want to communicate, fire people want adventure, water people want emotional security and earth people want material security. Obviously, the conflicting goals of a fire person and a water person could lead to tension.
But while compatible sun signs are a place to begin, they are not the whole story. The astrologer will not be so concerned about aspects between Suns in your natal charts, as she will be about aspects between the Sun, Moon and Venus. While the Sun shows life goals, the Moon shows emotional needs and Venus shows relationship desires. True soul mates support each other's needs and desires, as well as goals.
You can easily obtain birth charts at several astrological sites on the web. Print these out and compare them. What are you looking for? Simple, really - you are looking for those connections between the charts that indicate soul mates.
One of the first places to look to determine a soul mate relationship is the Seventh House. The house of marriage, as it is traditionally called, is exactly opposite the rising sign, or ascendant. It is here that we often find that - in spite of the emphasis on sun sign compatibility - opposites attract. The sign on the ascendant (the rising sign) naturally attracts the sign that it opposes, because that will be the sign on the Seventh House. For example, a headstrong, impulsive Aries rising will have diplomatic, peace loving Libra on the Seventh House. Aries and Libra are directly opposite in the zodiac. A tidy Virgo ascendant will have romantic, messy Pisces on the Seventh House. You will soon see from the sign on this house if your new love matches up.
Also, look at any planets in the Seventh House. Soul Mates will have strong ties through this house. For example, one partner's Sun or Moon may be in the other partner's Seventh House, showing a strong soul mate connection. If there are no planets in the Seventh House, the astrologer will use the ruling planet (the planet that rules the sign) as an indicator of Seventh House ties. For example, Libra on the Seventh House makes Venus the ruler, emphasizing that person's desire for a love connection. So the astrologer will look at the position of Venus in both charts, to see if this desire is supported. Find out the ruler of the empty Seventh House and look it up in the charts to see what it says about your relationship.
Aspects between Mars and Venus will also be looked for, for these two working in harmony make for a happy couple, romantically and sexually. The aspects between planets are important. The trine (120 degrees) and the sextile (60 degrees) are the easiest and most promising. The square (90 degrees) and the opposition (180 degrees) present some challenges but they can be even stronger in binding people together. Deciding if planets are in aspect is easy. The degree of the planet in a sign will be numbered 0-29. If a planet is at 10 degrees in one chart, and at 5-15 degrees in the other chart, they are in aspect. There should not be a difference greater than five degrees.
The outer planets are very important in determining the quality of a relationship. These planets are Uranus, Neptune and Pluto. Look for aspects between the outer planets and the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn between the charts. These seven planets are called the personal planets and aspects to these planets are important.
An aspect to Uranus to a personal planet in either chart or from one chart to another is worrying. This can indicate excitement and change, but also sudden break ups and inherently unstable relationships.
Aspects to Neptune indicate deep feelings and romance, and are important between soul mates, because strong aspects show the couple shares an intense romantic connection.
Aspects to Pluto can be very tricky - they can show a couple fated to be together, but they can also show obsession that could become a power struggle. Pluto is, however, often a strong factor with soul mates because of the depth of the connection.
The North Node of the Moon is also a very important indicator. The North Node is activated when someone important comes into our life, and is associated with finding a soul mate. If you or your partner's North Node connects with a personal planet in the other chart, this is a very strong clue that you could be soul mates.
So you can see there is much more to finding your soul mate than simply the sun sign. If you are not too confident of finding your soul mate through astrology yourself, have your charts checked out by a professional astrologer.
